PostSubject: Frontierlands Campaign recap   Sun Dec 16, 2018 2:42 pm

We begin our new campaign mid-September in the military city called Silver Stone.  Our adventures have been travelling the last 3 months together while working with Eastwallen Trading Company, guarding a large caravan from the Solben Empire to the far western Frontierlands.

Virum the Desert Goblin monk in training, Kenith, Half orc Eldritch Knight, Korin Half orc Battle Master, Waata ex-ship slave who has found the Allmother's favor, and Buckethead, a half orc frenzied bezerker.

A week has gone by since arriving in the city, a city busy with trade, harvest and preparation for winter, and our adventures are bored.  Looking for adventuring work, a few leads were discovered in the trading marketplace near the Empire Gate.

2 days ago, a handful of survivors arrived from the large sawmill 10 miles outside the city, claiming the Mill had been attacked and sacked by Goblins riding on massive spiders as mounts.  Dean Callaway, the Sawmill's owner, is rumored to look for independent adventures to deal with the problem, possiblely offering upto 300 gp.

Also, its also rumored that owners of Roldskull's Tomes & Maps, a half orc named Zorn Roldskull and his partner, a flambouant dwarven Bard named Borbos Everstone have recently aqcuired a map to the mysterious Malachite Ruins in the heart of the Falcon Hills, and is looking to sponser a expedition into it's depths.

But most pressingly was a friend of Buckethead, a enforcer at the Dock Markets named Elm Starkvalas and his foreman Everret needs help with giant rats who have raided the back of their warehouse.  First offering 20gp for the entire party, Korin and Virum manage to convience Everet each of the members were worth 20gp each.

Once a wage was agreed upon, the party set out, Waata tracking the rats with ease to an abandoned stone church a few miles outside the city walls on the edge of the Falcon Hills over looking the Bluestone Lake shores.
the footprints lead to the church's muck filled basement, where the rats inside swarm out, but are quickly slayed.

Inside the party quickly sweep thru, finding evidence of squatters living inside until they finally fine a set of human twins, teenagers between the ages 13 and 14, they seem to be arguing with a dark twisted robed gnome.  Once the gnome spots the party, he commands the kids to attack, forcing them to change to wererats.

But with righteous speed and strength, Virum sprang forward and slew the gnome with several well placed blows.  Buckethead quickly then severed the head of the gnome and turn to interragate the Twins.

During the questioning, Waata began to doubt the sincerity of the Twin's story and made a remark about such, which seem to be enough to cause Buckethead to attack the Boy and quickly slaying him.

Fearful, the Girl transform into a tiny rat and fleed into a mouse hole and got away.

Treasure gained - Spellbook, journal written in gnomish, 10 sp and a strange wand made from birchwood carved to look like a rat tail.
XP gained - 300 XP each

Session 2 -

The party returns to inside the city walls after purging out the wererat group from the abandoned hillside church, collecting their pay from Elm & Everett at the docks. From there the party returns back to the "The Old Wheel Inn" to discuss their next move and celebrate a job done.

At this time, they were spied upon by the mysterious cloaked figure named Ori, and entering the Inn was a large group of Noble looking Dragonborn of metallic scale.

The owner of the Inn, a middle aged human named Banthony "Ban" Hawkfen, some what star-struck by the dragonborn lead them to a private room.

Vyrum took this time to arrange a visit to the owner of the local brothel, a high elf named Monica Sunstarr who runs and owns "The Moon Light Inn". He learns that one way to earn her favor would to find evidence/information of an ancient series of magical portals thought to be created by an dead Empire that once ruled this land thousand of years ago.

Kennith harrassed a dwarven smithy named Kelvan Blackfist and his 5 sons to silver his weapon for a fifith of the price. He was unsuccessful.

Later in the afternoon/early evening, a rich noble looking human with a monocule and a top hat with a swagger cane enters the Old Wheel Inn. After speaking with the Innkeeper, this man quickly ducks into a private eating room that was given to the Dragonborn.

the man is Dean Callaway, owner of a successful lumber mill 10 miles outside of the city, offers 300 gold to the Dragonborn known as Granmyr. Apparently the Callaway Mill has been run over with spiders and purple skinned goblins, and Dean would like for Granmyr and his party to purge them out.

Granmyr's group are not true adventures, but a Knight Errant's retinue. And so Granmyr strides out into the common room and hires the Party to accompany him, and also hires Ori, who is a spellcaster of sorts.

The next day the party heads out, the night brought frost, but by mid day the air is warm with early Autumns morning cold leaves. The party sees several large buildings, a pair of pole barns and a main lodge. The land around the mill has been all logged away, but the edge of the mighty Volos Forest is but a mile away to the south. a Dark thick forest full of old growth Fir and cedar trees, home to many mysteries.

while the group investigates, they are ambushed by several different kinds of spiders and spider kinds. Large black spiders that rival the sizes of Draft horses being ridden by purple skinned, blacked eyed monstronities known as Ettercaps (spider humanoid mutants) and planar spiders who bounce between this realm and the spirit realm.

The spiders give a epic fight, but ultimately fall to the parties blades, except for the planar spiders who flee to the lodge. With that, the adventures retreat a mile or so away from the mill and rest into the later portion of the evening after the sun goes down.

Again the group moves back to the Mill, this time exploring further into the pole barn that looks like it used to host the mills beasts and tool storage. Inside they found a dozen or so cocoons filled with bodies that are incubating spider eggs and babies. The party deciede to destroy them before moving forward, and while doing so, the rest of the spiders from the lodge sneak up from the lodge to protect their young.

Again the party battle large spiders, spider kin, and spider the size of a wyvern (dubbed fatty) in a epic battle. Again the party are victorious, barely!

The group find no more spiders in the mill, or in the surrounding areas. but no treasure is found either. Lastly, evidence that the spiders came from the depths of Volos Forest from some muddy tracks leading away from the lodge.

The session ends with a decision for our adventures to make, do they try to track the spiders back to their lair inside the Dark forest, or call it good enough and return back to the city of Silver Stone.

Xp gained - 1500 (enough to level up to 4th level)

Session 3 -

The game started with our Adventures attempting (over 8 hours) to find the spiders trail back to their lair. Eventually they are successful.

Along the way they discover a marshy glade, and in the middle of the glade was an ancient outline of a building foundation. Inside this foundation was a broken stone archway.

Kennith attempted to mar and damage the broken arch in some fashon with Hand axe, but only managed to crack the handle of his axe instead.

The party moves on, as the sun sets and darkness decends upon the dark old growth forest. After another mile or 2, the party stumbles across 7 hanging coccoons which are filled with baby spiders. When they are disturbed, the egg sacs burst open, and 3 super spider swarms emerge!

The party quickly dispatches them, and discover several items and coin from slain previous adventures.

Again the party continues on, coming to a deep cold lake, which on the far side lays the spider's lair. A massive tangle of webbing, forest debry and massive old growth trees layered and overlaid for nearly 40 years, the lair is massive and reaches high into the sky.

Kennith begins to repeatly cast Firebolt cantrip into the webs itself, which raises an alarm to the nest and 3 large spiders with Ettercap riders spill out from above and attack the party. Again, the party repels the attackers, but with their resources depeleted, the adventures withdraw to the far side of the lake to take a long rest.

But just a few hours after setting up camp, the party is suprise attacked by anotther group of spiders, 4 draft horse sized ones and a huge sized "fatty".

Again the party slay the spiders, taking even more time to rest.

After resting, and mid day the following day, the party assualt the Web Lair of Spider Lake! they quickly scale the walls up to the entrance that is a dizzing 100 feet above the forest floor. Inside the party finds empty chambers, a massive coccoon gravesite, a poorly hidden pit trap that leads down into the lair proper.

Its there, inside the spider lair at ground level, they come to the final boss, a garguantion spider/ettercap mutant queen who immediately sprays them with poison barf!

The party attacks, and after several rounds of intense combat, Virum delivers the killing blow and slays the enormous beast. The rest of the spiders inside the lair flee in terror while the party gathers a very large treasure loot pile.

In a few days, the group makes it back to the city of Silver Stone and begin to devy up treasure and selling loot. During this time, they notice the city is swelling up with people, traders and troops and such. They learn that Harvest's End is a weeklong festivale is coming up, followed immediately by a local tradition of Winter's Leave where all the new boots of the Gryffonford Alliance Army are sent out on their yearly deployment and the old guard are returning back to Silver Stone.

The session ends with a long negotation session with Zorn Roldskull (a half-orc wizard) and Borbos Everstone (dwarven Bard) who own a Curiousity and Maps store in the city, who offer to be the parties Patron/employer.

Their offer - in exchange for maps, information to locations of dungeons and magical loots, magical item brokering and identifications the party will give them 25% profits for each successful adventure.

Virum told them they would consider it, but also exchanged a good sketch of the broken stone arch for 4 item identifications and then sold the pair a magical handy sack for a large sum of gold.

And that is where we ended the session for the night -

XP earned - 2500
Treasure - Lots of coins, Herblism kit, Dungeoneer's pack, a explorers pack, theives picks, hand ax, short sword, light crossbow with x20 ironwood bolts, Masterwork Superiour Silvered Halberd, x2 potions of healing, Half plate, climber's kit, x4 potions of healing, Large shield with a silver dragon on a field of black (magical +1), Heward's Handy haversack (sold), potion of Mind reading (consumed), potion of frost giant strength, Pearl of power (arcane), scroll of fireball, Tome of Magical Crafting of minor magical weapons.

Session 4 – A week in Silverstone

The game starts with the party doing some downtime activities, and there was a lot happening, so I will try to break it down, member by member.

Buckethead commissioned the local Blacksmith to craft him a Masterwork Superior Silvered Mithral Great sword (making it do +1 dmg, weight 3 LBS, and +1 initiative) in trade for the MW superior silvered Halberd and 1000 gp. It will be completed in 6 weeks. Also Buckethead help intimidate a man named Bevin as a favor for Waata. Later Buckethead learned that alcohol is heavily regulated in Silverstone due to city being a military town. Only 2 establishments in the city are allowed to serve Alcohol past 7 pm, “The Old Wheel Inn” & “The Moonlight Inn”. But during the day it’s acceptable for Ale tents and Spirit vendors to sell but not after nightfall. But after enquiring with Elm Starkvalas, Buckethead learns about an underground club called the “Blood and Sand” under the Trade Emporium, an illegal drinking club with a large gladiator ring in the center of the club floor. Lastly before leaving to hunt for Wyverns, Buckethead opened a bank account in the Trade quarter of the city with a balance of 400 gp.

Granamyr and his Dragonborn servants acquire a townhouse rental in the cities Uptown district, purchasing an aristocrat lifestyle. Also Granamyr set about learning about the local government and history, specifically the people in charge of the Silverstone keep verses the Council of Guilds. Once moved in and settled, Granamyr let his presences and established his name of the Drake Scale Order in the local high standing social circles by hosting a party. The party was mild success, many minor merchant lords and a few local Gryffonford Alliance Army officers and Clerics of the Allfather showed up. Granamyr successfully established an open conversation with Brother Sebastian, a High Priest of the Allfather, and one-time sell sword of some repute, about the abandon church just outside of the city. Granamyr assigned Gesh to research more into this.

Kennith traveled around the city, trying to purchase weapon and shield upgrades but was not successful due to poor negotiation skills. He discovered that there was several exotic MW armors and magical armors for sale at Xornavar’s Armory. Later he went to the undground club “Blood and Sand” with Buckethead, attempted to join the gladiator ring and was brutally beaten by an older fighter. Later when his unconscious body was dumped in his room at the “Old Wheel Inn”, he was mysteriously robbed of 100 gp, possibly by fellow party member. But when he attempted to file a complaint, realized that his actions from the night before where not entirely legal and might not be good to talk about it.

The party met a new party member, Nalla Silverback, a Goliath Wild Mage. Nalla, acting as a messenger for Edith Frostbeard and Maryanne Thollest, was looking to make a business offer to the group proper. The 3 women are looking to make some money through Alchemy and need some hard to find materials. A lot of these materials were bits and pieces of Wyvern and Wyvern eggs, and offered the group 1000 gp per Wyvern corpse and 250 gp per egg.

Waata met the owner of the general store and also the Trade Emporium, Thulvan “Thul” Starkvalas and purchased a fine MW ironwood hand crossbow for 1000 gp and favor. He was to “talk” to a man at the Docks to remind him he owed Thul some money. The man’s name was Bevin, and Buckethead assisted Waata with this endeavor. Later, after going over the offer by the 3 women for hunting Wyverns, Waata traveled to Edith’s quarters and successfully “negotiated” better terms, increasing the gold amount for the Wyverns.

Ori purchased some vials, and studied the harvesting documents detailing the ways to harvest the needed poison from the Wyverns. She spent the rest of her time concealing her identity.

Virum headed to the public records offices in Silverstone Keep to research the deed to the abandoned Church outside the city. He discovered it was one of the original buildings made with the Keep was being rebuilt 150 years ago. But the church was later abandoned when construction for the cathedral began. But from that time, the church had continued to pay property taxes on the church to keep it in their possession. Virum was able obtain a copy of the deed, and he went about to inquire with the church about obtaining the church. But when he met with High Priest of the Allfather, Brother Sebastian, he was met with thinly hid disdain.

All of this took a total of 3 days’ time. On the 4th day, the party met up on the docks of Bluestone Lake with their guide and boat transport, a dwarf named Dirk Granitearm and Ford (swamp guy). Ford started to teach people how to fish. Eventually they took the party northwest along with shore that borders the Falcon Hills for several miles before pulling ashore and making camp. They pointed out the large cave some miles away that they believed was the Wyvern’s lair. And so the party head out, Waata skillfully leading them to the 40’ cliff below the cave entrance. The group quickly scaled up quickly, and at the entrance of the massive Cavern, are swarmed 4 Giant sized bats that bombard the party with Sonic attacks!

But quickly the bats are driven off, and their nest quickly searched for loots. Ahead another challenge is apparent, a 100’ foot drop off into pure darkness. The party descends into a massive chamber where they find a huge 30’ robed statue and a set of massive double doors partially covered by crumbled pillars. To the other side in the darkness was some kind of underground lake and glowing red eyes of the Wyverns!

Ori quickly draws out a scroll of Fireball and blasts the beasts outright. The creatures enraged by this because the spell also destroyed the eggs in their nest. After a long combat, the party successfully slays both Wyverns and Kennith was able to harvest their poison.

While that was happening, Granamyr moved forward to search the beast’s nest, but was surprised attacked by a freshwater Albino Giant Octopus and dragged underwater. The party quickly attack and slay the beast.

While searching the nest, Virum finds a large treasure chest in the lake surrounding the nest and was able to drag it out of the water.
And that’s where we ended the session.

XP earned – 1,300 (enough to reach 5th level)

Treasure looted –

Bat’s nest – 180 gp, 333 sp, 16 pp, a sack with heap of costume jewelry worth about 150 gp, leather armor x2, small sized breastplate armor, M.W. superior Lt. Crossbow, x20 bolts, small sized Maul (basically a Warhammer), potion of healing

Session 5 – The Time Vault of Tiberius Blueflame

The game start immediately after the end of the last session. The party pack out the pieces of the Wyverns needed by the Alchemist Maryanne. They camp at the Lake shore and in the morning sailed back to Silverstone. Once they reach the city, the reward is collected from the Alchemist while Waata and Edith take a small vacation from the adventuring life. With that done, Virum goes about identifying magical items through Roldskull’s Tomes and Maps Curiosity Shop. And then the treasure is divvied up among the members of the party. Kennith purchases a Masterwork Reinforced Ironwood shield from Xornavar’s Armory.

After a day or so of relaxation and celebration, Granamyr contacts Dirk Granitearm and Ford (swamp man) to secure transportation to the same location as before when tracking the wyverns. They agreed and the party again set out for the Wyvern’s Cavern to explore the hidden dungeon inside of its depths. After camping again on the shores of Bluestone Lake, the party headed out to the Cavern, minus Waata who stayed in the city.

After many hours of travel up the hillsides and back inside the deep cavern, the party then worked for several hours to clear rubble away from the double doors leading into the mysterious vault. The door was sealed with a riddle which Virum quickly answered which caused the massive doors to open. The Vault was majestically built with tiled granite walls and floors, illuminated by hanging braziers burning a strange Blue green flame. In the first chamber was large dais surrounded by water and standing on the dais is translucent glimmering image of a Bluescaled Dragonborn, slightly hunched wearing elaborate made wizard robes, holding a gnarled staff with a burl at its end. The dragonborn introduces himself as Tiberius Blueflame, Grand Sorcerer of the Arkanus Empire just before the 2nd Great War. He asks the party if they wish to face the Arkanus Challenges and learn the truth about the 2nd Great War, or be slain as interlopers in his Time Vault. The party agreed to face the challenges below, and is quickly teleported into the vast depths of the Vault. In the new chamber, there is a strange door, made of stone and circular, and slightly glowing written runes upon the door in the form of another riddle which Nalla answers correctly this time. The next chamber is a massive chamber called the Temple of Memory, dedicated with a pair of statues standing 20’ high are depictions of Gaia the Allmother and Odin the Allfather.

Lining the walls were small alcoves, inside each were fluted marble pedestals with half sphere shaped multicolored orbs. Kennith bravely touches the orbs and learns they are vision showing small slivers of memories of people that were alive just before the start of the 2nd Great War, living in the mighty Arkanus Empire. This goes on for several minutes before the party heads out of this chamber and begins to explore the Vault.

From the Temple of Memory the party stumble across a scroll chamber dedicated to the study of culture of the Arkanus Empire, and then enter the Hall of Magical studies, introduced by Tiberius’s Hologram. The hologram explains that only 5 items can be taken from the chambers beyond, one chamber dedicated to the creation of magical scrolls, another Alchemy and the last was stuffed full of magical wondrous items. The party begins to loot through the chambers and notice that the lights inside the wondrous item chamber are flickering and magically faulty.

When Ori enters snatching a magical broom, an alarm goes off and all the light within the Vault turn to a dull red color. A secret door opens and a 1000 year old Flesh Golem shambles out and attacks the party. The doors to the treasure chambers slowly begin to close while bunches of potions fall and crash together creating a massive Black pudding which also attacks the party.

Both creatures are destroyed with powerful magic’s cast by Ori, Nalla and Kennith and Granamyr blessing Buckethead’s greatsword.

From there the party continues to explore, soon finding a massive assembly room full of partial pieces of clockwork items and weapons and armor. Beyond that chamber was a huge forge, manned by an enormous Flaming Salamander creature and an enslaved Fire Elemental. Barking a demand in Infernal which Ori is able to translate, Virum quickly hands a plain dagger to the Fire Salamander Forger who takes the item and quickly enchants the blade.

He hands the dagger back to Virum, enchanted with a basic form of Flame Tongue enchantment, and rudely slams the door closed in the party’s face. Confused, the party moves on, finding more scroll room like chambers and promptly ignoring them. Later the party finds a Clockwork tinkerer’s workshop that has been completely destroyed by an enraged Gorgon!

The combat with the magical Bull beast is swift, but not before its magical breath weapon turns Buckethead into Stone! With the party spent of resources and discouraged by the transformation of Buckethead, the party rests for a night. The next morning the party find the stairs leading up to an elevator hopefully leading out of the Vault. With Nalla’s great strength and size, they manage to drag Bucketheads massive statue body to the elevator and get up to the level above, only to find a Zombie Beholder in the chamber above!

The party throw large amounts of magic’s and enchanted attacks at the rotting creature, only allowing the creature to get a few spells off before being slained. From there the party fined a trapped hallway in which Virum’s roguish training comes into play and are quickly disabled. But unfortunately Virum’s luck comes to an end, when attempting to answers yet another riddle, but incorrectly, resulting in a lighting trap going off and severely damaging the party.

But miraculously the door opens into another large chamber, the walls lined with tapestries depicting enormous battle between the combined forces of the races of good against the demonic voidspawn hordes spilling out of strange pyramid structures in the middle of the great desert. But when Granamyr, Virum and Kennith entered the chamber, the door slammed shut again, separating the party. Spilling out from the tapestries were strange Spector creatures that floated out and attacked the 3 warriors. But with Granamyr’s faith and Virum’s newly enchanted dagger, the 3 warriors were able to dispatch the incorporeal creatures. Just before the end of the session, the door leading out of the chamber had open and the party was reunited, and Virum noticed a hidden door in the far wall.

XP gained this session – 1,950

Treasure gained – 2800 gp from the Alchemist, Potion of Longevity (Virum), Potion of Supreme Healing (Used by Nalla), Potion of invincibility (Virum), * a magical cap (think Oliver twist), * a magical broom, * a magical crown royal bag, * a palm sized red ruby that magical, A dagger of Flame tongue (no bonus to hit or damage, just additional fire damage and light source) Virum
